The Director General of Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority, Emile Bienvenu, and 17 other officials have been arrested over alleged involvement in the production and distribution of illicit alcoholic beverages. Ten of the suspects are linked to the Rwanda FDA, while others include a division manager from the Rwanda Standards Board and local executive secretaries.

The arrests are part of a broader nationwide crackdown that has seen more than 140 companies closed and hundreds of alcohol brands recalled since August 2. An importation ban has been placed on over 50 alcohol brands, and at least 16 company owners and staff have also been detained.

Rwanda Investigation Bureau spokesperson Thierry Murangira stated that 97 case files related to illicit alcohol crimes have been forwarded to prosecution since July 20. He accused some officials of abusing their authority for personal benefit and facilitating companies that produced beverages failing to meet required standards.

Murangira highlighted that investigators found companies operating without meeting Good Manufacturing Practices, with some producing in unhygienic conditions. Irregularities in product registration were also uncovered, including unregistered products being manufactured under approved brand names.
