Chaired by Jean-Philbert Nsengimana, the summit focused on the theme "Wellness for All: Powered by Intelligent Health Systems." Nsengimana, who previously served as Rwanda's youngest minister and holds an MBA and a Master in Public Administration, emphasized the need for Africa to build its own technological solutions.
Nsengimana highlighted critical questions surrounding the continent's adoption of artificial intelligence and digital health systems, particularly concerning the control of data, infrastructure, and intelligence. He questioned whether Africa can move beyond being a mere consumer of technology to achieve meaningful technological sovereignty.
The Africa HealthTech Summit aims to expand its reach beyond Kigali, with planned engagements in Canada, Europe, North America, and Asia. An AHTS Europe edition is scheduled for Amsterdam next July, and discussions are underway to host the summit in Nigeria. Nsengimana's initiative seeks to shift Africa's position in global conversations, enabling the continent to host its own discussions on its terms.
